Patients with severely diseased or damaged hearts are
diagnosed with end-stage heart failure, and the treatment option
of choice is heart transplant. Baylor University Medical Center
has seen a high number of these patients over the past few years
and has invested significant resources to recruit world-renowned
transplant specialists to its medical staff to meet the demand.
Gonzalo V. Gonzalez-Stawinski, MD, and Shelley Hall, MD, lead the
team of world-renowned heart transplant specialists, including surgeons,
transplant cardiologists and mid-level clinical staff. The transplant team
maintains continual communication with referring physicians about
their patients at every step.
Baylor University Medical Center is one of the busiest heart transplant
programs in the world. In fiscal year 2016, 66 individuals received
heart transplants at the medical center. Standard with an advanced
transplantation center of this caliber, the one-year post-transplant
survival rate, a key success metric, remained one of the best in the
nation – 90.0%.

For patients, the benefits of a busy transplant
center include:
• Shorter wait times on the transplant list –
currently the median wait time is just eight days*
• Acceptance of high-risk patients that have been
declined by other transplant programs
• Collaborative relationships with other transplant
centers and heart failure centers, which enable
dual listing at two or more centers, reducing wait
time for transplant candidates
