I just saw a butterfly, it flew above my head,

Then sat on a sunflower in the flower bed.

On its wings so delicate it brought the best of news:

Summer is finally here so throw away your blues.

‘Tis the season to be merry, the time to be glad.

The time to go a bit crazy. Come on! Just a tad.

Load your cars with tents and boats, and your children too,

And spend hours travelling to see the sea so blue.

On the beach set up your barbie, dig a hole or two,

They will keep your beers bit colder and a brollie too.

Return the spade to your children, send them off to play,

And enjoy the water’s whispers in your little bay.

Cause I bet you that this moment won’t last very long,

With your children playing nearby, something will go wrong.

“Mum! He threw sand in my eyes!” “Dad! She took my cap!”

From the comfy doze you wake up thinking …. crap!

In the hopes to tire the kids, you make an evil plan,

A full day hike through the forest should exhaust your clan.

But your plan, seemingly perfect, has got a few small flaws,

The biggest being that your children go without a pause.

Well ahead of you they run, up and down the track,

Loaded with their useless gear, you’re glad to make it back.

Feeling knackered, oh so tired, you want to have a snooze,

Your children, though, full of spirit, with energy still ooze.

No more hikes and no more scheming, you make up your mind.

From now on it’s beach holidays – weather, please be kind.

To lie in the sand and sun, soaking up the rays

Is your goal that you will stick to in the next few days.

Summer is still in full swing when children think “Oh dear.

Holidays are almost over, the school year is here!”

You try to be sympathetic, you try to keep your cool,

While inside you’re celebrating them going back to school!

You enjoyed this lovely catch up on family time,

Playing games and having laughs (followed with some wine!),

But chocka full of great memories that with you will stay,

Your return to reality cannot be too grey.

Enjoy your summer!!!

kiwi summer time

I am a mum to an amazing young lady who will be two years soon. I am originally from the Czech Republic but have lived in Auckland for almost 10 years now with my kiwi husband. I am an early childhood teacher by profession (currently running a little home based care so that I can be with my daughter for as long as possible). In my spare time I enjoy making jewellery, my necklaces are quite unique and bright; as well as doing a bit of writing. Rhyming is something I've done for as long as I remember and seeing a poem develop makes me very happy.
