When you buy from a small business you are helping a mum pay for dance lessons for her daughter and a new carseat for her son.

Most importantly, ask if the seller has researched the safety of their product. - Are there any applicable safety standards for the product and are they being adhered to? - Are there any small parts that could be a choking hazard, and how are they fixed/fastened to the product? - Ask about the length of anything that could potentially be a strangulation hazard. - Are there any toxic/dangerous chemicals used in the crafting process. Things to consider are sealed or varnished wooden items, anything waxed, dyed or painted.

If your child has allergies, you should also take this into account and ask questions of the seller. - Are there weight limits or age restrictions. - Ask the seller to clearly state the intended use of the product. - Are there any "DO NOT's" applicable to the product? - Where are materials or supplies sourced from? Beware of supplier sources where "organic" and "non-toxic" are purely used as marketing words.
