National Re-Gifting Day Every year on the Thursday before Christmas people and businesses across the United States participate in National Re- gifting Day. The third Thursday of the month of December seems to be the most popular day for annual employee/company Christmas parties. The phenomenon was popularized on an episode of the television show ‘Seinfeld’ titled “The Label Maker’ and was declared National Re-gifting Day by the State of Colorado on October 24, 2008 by Gov. Bill Ritter, Jr. So, this is big stuff folks! Re-gifting can be a little cruel. Imagine someone has spent some time finding just the right gift for you and you just turn around and give it to someone else. How dare you?! But what the heck. Have some fun with it! Many people now have re-gifting Christmas parties at home as well as offices. I do suggest some caution when re-gifting something however. It was unwanted once and may be unwanted again. There are some things to watch out for and tips when re-gifting: • Re-gift only if you’re certain the recipient will enjoy your (unwanted) gift. If at any time you thought of it as junk, clutter or dust collector, it’s probably not regiftable. • The gift must be brand new (aka unused!) and in its original packaging. No, hand me downs! • Romantic gifts are out! Especially, back to the same person. Also, it’s another level of cheap for someone to give a gift from an old partner to a new one. • If the gift had special meaning to the original giver, don’t re-gift. At least don’t let them find out. • Don’t re-gift if the item is handmade or personalized even if the recipient has the same name as yours. • Never re-gift something to the original giver. Tacky!!!! • Re-wrap all gifts and remove any tags. No clues!!!! • Never re-gift a fruitcake because it will definitely come back….some day. • Re-gift in different social circles. It’s actually safer in different counties. • Be prepared to fully commit to the lie. If you don’t have a ready response to a question like, “Where did you find this? I’ve been looking everywhere for one!” your ruse will be exposed. One final note, before re-gifting consider donating it to charity. If you get it back you won’t have to act surprised. Happy Re-gifting Day everyone and have some fun with it. Dean Cheeseman PAGE 20 PAGE 12 OUR VALLEY SANTA CLARITA
