THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS Maybe that’s the idea that salvation is available to all. Especially, those whose ordinary daily lives seem mundane to others, even maids and ladies dancing. Don’t know about the geese and swans though. The ten Lords-a-leaping denote the Ten Commandments. Lords are people of authority and the Ten Commandments are definitely authoritative and we should pay attention to them in our daily lives. Eleven Pipers piping are a sign of the eleven faithful Apostles (the twelve minus Judas). Pipers are musicians playing a pipe, bag pipers. Pipers entertain crowds and call attention to their music. Finally, the twelve Drummers drumming evoke the twelve points of the Apostles Creed, which outlines what Christians believe. Drumming may be a bit over the top, but understandable. While the origin of this Carol is one of Faith, people think of it and remember it as one of Love. It may be difficult to express our love for someone 12 days in a row or have the deep pockets to do so as this carol does (have you priced Turtledoves lately?). We should never hesitate to express that love even to those we don’t know well yet. If we don’t do it, they might just fly away and those ‘Calling Birds’ may be calling someone else. Give and share much love this Christmas and have faith. Merry Christmas! Dean Cheeseman OUR VALLEY SANTA CLARITA PAGE 19
