From humble beginnings , Top Hat is now one of the most modern dry cleaners in London
A fter half a century of keeping west London looking smart , you have to take your hat off to Mike Moran and his expert dry-cleaning staff .
With branches in Chiswick and Hammersmith , Top Hat is not just an established business , it also takes a real pride in supporting key dates on the community calendar .
And no date is circled in red quite like the annual Devonshire Road street party , which transforms the street of independent traders and chic eateries into a rolling carnival every September .
Ten years ago , when the Devonshire Road Top Hat premises opened , Mike put a rocket under the existing sedate , low-key event in the road , and lit the blue touch paper . “ Mum and dad always taught me that if you ’ re going to do something , overdo it ,” he laughed .
On September 9 , when Chiswick is back from its summer hols , the street will again be transformed . Last year there were nine different music acts , including a Brazilian marching band .
As usual , local charities will benefit , with W4 Youth the main gainer of 2017 . The day is supported by Hounslow Chamber of Commerce , with Barclays Bank generously matching every pound raised .
“ At Top Hat we ’ ll give away Pimm ’ s and cake , and other traders will do food and drink . There ’ ll be loads of music and a hog roast ,” said Mike .
It is a special year for Top Hat ; the 50th year of a business founded by Mike ’ s parents , Mike and Pat , in Hounslow .
“ Mum and dad sold their house to set up the first shop , and we lived in the flat above ,” said Mike . “ In the second year , dad saw that they ’ d knocked down the Chiswick Empire , and asked the bank to lend him money to buy a shop .
“ They didn ’ t … but the bank manager personally lent him the money ! That gave us a shop in
Chiswick .” Top Hat moved to Devonshire Road a decade ago , and it is family-owned to this day .
