STABLE THINKING
of the borough’s 6.3 sq miles
is occupied by the public park,
opened in 1888, designed by
Col John Sexby, London’s first
chief officer of parks.
Of the 41 bombs which landed in
Ravenscourt Park during the Second
World War, the one which did the
most damage was an incendiary
which fell in January 1941 and
destroyed the old manor house
which – half a century earlier – had
been established as Hammersmith’s
public library. When the fire was
put out, it was beyond repair, so the
rubble was swept into the buildings
extensive cellars, and grassed over.
All that remains is the stable block,
now the café.

It is nearing the centenary of
the death of one of area’s most
distinguished residents, the
Arts & Crafts artist Christopher Whall.
A stained glass specialist, he lived at
19 Ravenscourt Road and worked in
a furniture workshop at 1 Ravenscourt
Park. He created many church windows,
his finest are in Gloucester Cathedral.
DID YOU KNOW... IT’S A FACT...
Five street-light car-charge points
were installed in Westcroft Square
in one day. The sockets, fitted by
Ubitricity, do not need planning
permission. Westcroft Square
electric car owner Adam Kelly said:
“These are great for me, my family
and other residents.” H&F Council
aims to install 150 electric vehicle
charging points by 2018.
