Our Patch AUGUST 2014 Our Patch AUGUST 2014 IN THE WORKS The NEW-LOOK LYRIC Our Patch gets a behind-the-scenes look at the huge construction project transforming Hammersmith’s Lyric theatre into a 21st-century community hub and arts centre. On right, work to create a new foyer and below, how the finished project will look in 2015 - including the new foyer PICTURES: DAVID TETT & NINA SOLOGUBENKO 4 / 5 he scaffolding has come down, and the first glimpses of the new two-storey extension to the Lyric – the Reuben Foundation Wing – have been revealed. The site is now a hive of activity as 140 builders race to complete the works ahead of the scheduled completion date of April next year. But don’t fret, the Lyric will be open for this year’s panto – Dick Whittington and his Cat – from November. Size, space and light are the overwhelming impressions as you walk into the Lyric’s new space. Rehearsal rooms have great natural light, while editing rooms and the film studio have no windows at all. The whole projects feels huge, the highlight being the atrium with its glass roof. The dance studio is an exciting space that will extend the performing arts experience for young people. The room is large, double-height and will have all the essential facilities for dancers including sprung floor, mirrors and the added benefit of a bespoke sculpted roof-light that will let in natural light.
