Definitions For those of you who may be uncertain of exactly what a prosthetist and orthotist are and the services a prosthetic and orthotic facility may provide, let me give you a brief overview of some definitions. Prosthesis: Fabricated substitute for a diseased or missing part of the body (Stedman’s Concise Medical Dictionary). Orthosis: Orthopedic device appliance, as a brace or splint, which prevents or assists movement of the spine or limbs (Stedman’s Concise Medical Dictionary) Certified prosthetist: Medical professional who has been formally educated and trained to evaluate, design, fabricate and fit patients who have a limb deficiency. The limbs include both upper and lower extremities and are designed and fabricated to fit the needs of each patient. Certified orthotist: Medical professional who has been formally educated and trained to evaluate, design, fabricate and fit orthotic devices.
