“The next generation was looking to come back to the family farm and we realized we needed to do something to sustain the coming families. We had initially looked into hops, but the labor seemed to coincide with our potato operation. With the vigor of the next generation we decided to learn about the malting process and set up a pilot system to fully learn the process. In two years of malting on the pilot system we were able to prove our quality and consistency to our customers and learn enough about the science of malting in order to set up a larger system, which is currently being constructed.” Jacob Buck Pictured from left to right: Bruce, Brent, Caleb, Josh, Jacob, Jared and Barry Buck Export Ale was the first beer produced at Federal Jack’s Restaurant & Brew Pub, which opened in Kennebunk, Maine in June of 1992. The brew pub was founded by Fred Forsley and brewer Alan Pugsley, the pair opened Shipyard Brewing in Portland, Maine in 1994 with Export as that brewery’s flagship. “We’re very proud of Export,” Fred Forsley says. “It was a rule-breaking beer when we launched it. Now its place in craft beer has changed from an assertive trailblazer to a sessionable go-to beer with character and flavor. By adding this local malt to the beer we’re giving Export a nice update and adding a new chapter to its history.” SUMMER 2017 49
