Our Maine Street's Aroostook Issue 32 : Spring 2017 | Page 12

The silver apple, my sister correctly surmised, was placed on a tree stump in her yard by a prankster –me. I just could not resist. The PVC pipe is the result of an enterprising red squirrel. Last fall when taking a break from a project, my husband joined me on the deck for a cup of coffee. As we sat enjoying our coffee and the warm fall day, we spotted movement near his work area. A red squirrel absconded a piece of PVC pipe. We were too awestruck to stop the squirrel and simply watched it drag the pipe from the yard to the trees. Not wanting to disturb the squirrel’s plan, we did not go in search of the pipe and forgot about it until we found it in the spring. While we still have no idea what the squirrel planned to do with the pipe, we are happy its plans did not include attacking us with it. Now the bathroom sink is another issue. I still have no idea how the sink got there or why it is there. It lies on top of the remains of a once very deep snowbank. It is completely intact so it seems unlikely that anyone was trying to dump it. There are no nearby houses or businesses; there was nothing around it, only trees and spring abandoned railroad tracks. How did that sink get there? Perhaps the sink was being transported to a job site when the truck carrying it hit a frost heave and the sink bounced off the truck, landed in the snowbank and sank. Now, the main problem with this theory is you would think the contractor would realize the sink was gone and go look for it. But, like the single boot, you never know what people are thinking. Keep your eyes open this spring. You never know what you will find. And if you need a bathroom sink, let me know. I can direct you to a lovely one. 10 SPRING 2017
