Winter Wonderl and Greater East Grand Lake Area By Heather Zakupowsky One of the greatest kept secrets is the winter fun that is available in the Greater East Grand Lake Area. If you enjoy outdoor sports in an uncrowded atmosphere, this is your kind of place. Although we are tucked away in the often overlooked area of southeastern Aroostook and northern Washington counties, we are readily accessible just two hours north of Bangor or approximately an hour south of Presque Isle. Year-round accommodations range from housekeeping cabins on the lake and riverside to finer amenities available at First Settler’s Lodge along the snowmobile trails. The local East Grand Snowmobile Club maintains 60 miles of well-groomed trails that are easily accessible to the state’s ITS system as well as local clubs to the north and south. Gas and food are available in downtown Danforth with trails running through town. Our snowmobile trails offer challenges for all skill levels. There are straight open stretches for those who like a little 42 WINTER 2015 speed, but also many wooded hilly trails requiring a more technical ride. Even though our trails are well maintained, they’re lightly used, making our biggest draw the “quiet and serene atmosphere” that those from away really appreciate. Our rural environment lends ample opportunity for wildlife viewing as deer, moose, bobcat and fox are often seen along the trails. For those that enjoy a little slower pace, our groomed trails are used by cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The wind packed snow on the lakes also makes great terrain for traveling on foot.
