Our Maine Street's Aroostook Issue 22 : Fall 2014 | Page 27

Old dog and pup, asleep on the floor, Noses guarding the open door. Old man dozes, a smile on his face, As he dreams of another time and place. And a lot of old friends, With unusual names, Like Heidi, Hilda, Max, and Snowball, Reddi, Butch, Farouk, and James. Who stalked the mighty robin, Pursued the snowshoe hare, and waited by a trout pool, When the old man lingered there. Old man wakes and rises, Mutters a silent prayer, For friends no longer with him, And slowly climbs the stairs. He pats old dog and puppy, Lays upon his bed, And dreams of mighty robins, The speedy snowshoe hare, And quiet country trout pools, And old friends waiting there. ---Untitled Poem: Summer 1990 Joseph Walton Shaw (April 1933- April 1991) Photo Copyright © 2014 Gene Cyr, Washburn northernmainepictures.com SUMMER 2014 25
