Aroostook on my Mind
by Martha Stevens-David
I crossed the line again today
Going back in time
To my childhood, my growing up years
To a better place, if only in my mind…
Driving north on the interstate
My soul begins to come alive
As the countryside slips on by
I take a deep breath and begin to cry…
I cry for what was
And for what might have been
And I wonder to myself
Do I really need to go back again…
The miles and the memories slip away
And off in the distance I see
The sign in big bold letters
that means the world to me…
I slow the car and coast on up
to an ancient man-made sign
I read the words that stop my heart
“AROOSTOOK COUNTY LINE”
