Accord combating holiday hunger
A recent All-Party
Parliamentary Group report
estimates millions of children
could risk being hungry in the
school holidays due to the lack
of free school meals.
However, Holiday Kitchen,
our school holiday learning,
food and play programme,
continues to offer fun activities
and healthy communal meals
for children and their families
during school holidays.
Holiday Kitchen is delivered in
community-based venues across
the West Midlands, positively
tackling food poverty, social
isolation and physical inactivity
which are most acute during
summer breaks. In summer
2016, Holiday Kitchen provided
a total of 6,718 activity days
with meals across 27 venues
in the West Midlands. Sara

the number of families with
children relying on food banks
during school holidays. Our
Holiday Kitchen programme is
recognised across the country as
a model to take forward to try to
combat some of these issues.”

After taking part, the majority
of parents and carers felt that
they ate more healthily. One
parent said: “During the holidays,
I’ve struggled with finance and
making nutritious meals. Holiday
Kitchen helps me in a very safe,
informative and fun way.”
