NEW BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Brian D. Rankin Q. Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? A. I have lived my whole life in Unalaska. My mom, AB Rankin, raised us here, and now I am raising my family on the island. It’s a great, close-knit community. Q. Do you have a family? A. I am married, and my wife Sarah and I are raising our daughters: Abbygale and Anastasia. Growing up in Unalaska is pretty special, and I am proud the girls have experienced it! Q. Do you practice subsistence or other traditions? A. Yes – I enjoy fishing for salmon, halibut and crab. I have never fished commercially, but my daughters, especially the youngest (Anastasia), like to go out on the boat and help catch fish. She’s pretty much my skipper! Our family also has a lot of fun picking berries in the summer, and I like to hunt for Ptarmigan and duck Q. What do you do for a living? A. Even when I was little, I loved playing with Tonka trucks and toy bulldozers in the back yard – so it seemed natural for me to become a licensed heavy equipment operator. I have worked for the City of Unalaska since 1998, helping maintain the roads throughout the year running loaders dozers and graders. I also work with a local company, Northern Alaska Contractors, in their quarry (an OC-owned property), helping maintain the operations yard, grading and occasionally driving trucks. I served as a member of the Unalaska Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years and helped found the Alaska State Firefighters Association’s Unalaska Chapter, and I’m a Life Member of the Alaska State Firefighters Association. I am also a proud member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Visit www.ounalashka.com to keep up with current News & Events, find answers to questions, and download important forms.
