 This area displays new inventions and innovative ways of constructing instruments from the 19th century. You will discover how the saxophone was created and get to know other novelties like the sarrusophone or oddities like the walking stick violin. Furthermore you will find instruments constructed with unusual materials like a bassoon made of brass or a flute made of glass. One of the highlights of this period w as the boom in the use of the piano: from grand pianos used in concerts to upright pianos for domestic use. In this part of the exhibition you will find out about how the piano became part of the middle-class home during that century; sometimes adopting unusual forms like    the desk piano or the wardrobe piano.
