5 Why WORDS BY K AR A CUMMINS Reasons Being Single in Your 20s Calls For Celebration, Not Commiseration. Generally I write about issues which are global, puzzling and damn well tragic, but just this once I’ll switch the focus to a topic less global and more personal, but equally as tragic: my love life. I can’t say it happened intentionally, but it has evolved into something I own wilfully: I’ve spent the majority of my youth years single. It isn’t the type of single which acts as a free and flirty interlude between concessive relationships or ‘things’. Rather, it has been a long-term membership to the single club. In this time, I’ve watched friends fail in love, endure break ups, move overseas, get married, and play the dating game, all in the name of love. Occasionally I’ve participated in this emotional rollercoaster, but mostly I spectated from afar. It is easy to feel a little remorseful for a crappy love life, like when you’re listening to Ed Sheeran, or identifying with Bridget Jones’ character to a worryingly degree. However, most of the time it is downright spectacular. So, here’s just five of the reasons why being single in your 20s is exhilarating and addictive. ORENDA 5 16
