The area’s elevation ranges from just under 2,500 feet to about 6,500 feet. Steep canyons and sharp ridges define much of the terrain. The wilderness is bisected by the deep canyon where Black Canyon Creek flows down into the scenic South Fork or the John Day River. The area is great for wildlife viewing, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. JOHN DAY FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT (Featured on Opposite Page) This 13,944-acre park is renowned for its preserved, complete record of fossil plants and animals. Fossils date back as far as the Cenozoic Era, 40 million years ago. The monument is divided into three areas: Painted Hills (northwest of Mitchell), Sheep Rock (northwest of Dayville), and Clarno (West of Fossil). The park is characterized by hills, deep ravines, and eroded fossil-bearing rock formations. It’s bordered by the Cascade Range to the west, the Ochoco Mountains to the south, and the Blue Mountains to the east. OREGON TRAVEL AND RECREATION GUIDE
