“A irlie Winery is not a simple stop along the way, people return time after time and bring picnics, their families, even the family dog; it’s not a stop, it’s a stay,” explains owner Mary Olson. A two-year job in Oregon changed her life forever when she decided to buy a winery. “I described my dream perfectly because my realtor found Airlie, which is small enough to maintain a peaceful lifestyle, but one that has a winemaker because I knew that I couldn’t make wine.” Airlie creates 11 wine varieties, almost all of which are award winners, and produces 7,000 cases a year. Some 60 percent of the grapes come from Airlie’s 30 acres and 40 percent from a vineyard 20 miles away in Dallas. johan vineyards W One aspect of Airlie’s farming philosophy is that of sustainability, “Sustainability is like a three-legged stool,” Olson adds, “it’s how you treat the earth, your employees, and your customers; if that’s not sustainable, it won’t work.” So, this summer come by for an afternoon tasting outside near the lovely pond; you won’t be disappointed. 15305 Dunn Forest Road Monmouth, Oregon 97361 503-838-6013 www.airliewinery.com Hours: December through February by appointment or chance, March through November Thursday – Monday 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. special feature: oregon wine airlie winery 503-838-6013 airliewinery.com & WILLAMETTE VALLEY OREGON Serious Whites Elegant Reds since 1986 Tasting Room Hours: Thurs - Mon 12 to 5 (Mar - Nov) Dec - Feb by appt or chance 15305 Dunn Forest Road Monmouth, OR 97361 hen it comes to organic fruit and wine, Johan Vineyards is the establishment to study. A model built upon the experience of Johan’s winemaker, Dan Rinke, the vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic®. The philosophy of biodynamic farming is that one treats the whole farm as one living organism. “The maintenance and development of the microbial life of the soil is a necessity,” explains owner Dag Johan Sundby, a Norwegian transplant who fell in love with winemaking. “I was introduced to Oregon Pinot Noir and realized that was what I wanted to do. So I started looking for properties and found this one in 2004.” Johan produces 2,500 cases per annum of 11 different wines, and they sell fruit to other organic wineries. “The 85-acre vineyard is in a cooler area with shallow topsoil, but we have a deep clay layer that contains moisture, so once the roots set, we don’t have to irrigate anymore.” Additionally, the drier climate and winds keep the grapes dry which promotes disease eradication.
