Golden years : don ’ t worry too much about your sink , oven and fridge being in a perfect ‘ golden triangle ’. Your kitchen layout should work for you , whether the room is traditional or modern in style .

SHOW SOME REFLECTION Everyone knows the old trick of adding a mirror to a room to make it seem larger – but you may not be aware that other reflective surfaces can have the same effect . By adding worktops and floor tiles made out of glossy materials you can create the illusion of more space in the kitchen .
LOAD UP ON STORAGE Clever storage solutions are your best friends when designing a small kitchen . There are loads of smart cupboards and cabinets that extend outwards when open to allow you to easily organise your items . If you have high ceilings , make use of them — installing a hanging rack for your cookware , for example , is a great way to free up space elsewhere .

LIGHTEN UP ! Although kitchens with dark colour schemes can make for striking spaces , in most cases it ’ s better to use lighter colours as they will make the room seem airier . Don ’ t think that this means that white is your only option – look into pastel blues , greens , yellows and oranges as well until you find a palette you completely fall for .
SAVE SOME SPACE Opt for furniture and fixtures with smaller footprints . If you ’ ve always coveted an island , you may find that you actually have the space for a smaller , moveable kitchen island or reclaimed butcher ’ s block . Thinner kitchen counters are widely available – however , be sure to choose some that still offer you enough work space to be practical .
