GCSE Dance C

The course gives students the opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of Dance . Students will develop their practical skills through techniques classes , performances of work and the opportunity to create their own dance pieces . Professional works are explored and analysed to develop a deeper understanding of this subject . The three core areas of Dance are : Performance , Choreography and Appreciation .
Component 1 : Choreograph and Performance
Performance ( 30 % - internally marked , externally moderated ) Students will learn about the physical , expressive and mental skills necessary for effective and high quality performance . They will develop knowledge , understanding and skills required to perform as a soloist and as a duet / trio . Students are required to perform two dances :
Solo Performance : Students will be required to perform a set movement of 1 and a half minutes demonstrating that they are able to accurately interpret and replicate the action , dynamic and spatial content .
Duet / Trio Performance : Students will create a performance in collaboration with the teacher which is three and a half minutes in duration .
Choreography ( 30 % - internally marked , externally moderated ) Students are required to create a piece of choreography in response to an externally set stimulus . They will demonstrate their knowledge of choreography in the selection and use of action , dynamic , space and relationships to convey the artistic intent and to shape their dance . Students can choose to choreograph a solo or group piece .
Component 2 : Dance Appreciation
Written exam 1 hour 30 minutes ( 40 % - externally marked ) Students will develop their appreciation of dance by developing critical , evaluative and reflective skills into performance and choreographic work . They will develop their understanding and critical thinking of professional works by exploring a GCSE Dance anthology of eight short dance works . They will also make links between the relationships of the performance , choreography and production and how these enhance understanding of time , place , character , mood and meaning .
Careers for which this qualification is useful : Dancer / teacher / movement therapy / dance historian or critic / choreographer
The course will be confirmed ( either GCSE or BTEC ) depending on the cohort choosing Dance as an option and their needs .
