The Avon Valley School & Performing Arts College GCSE ART & DESIGN B C D C The aim of our teaching in Art for Year 9 is to prepare students for the rigours of the Art GCSE. GCSE Art and Design consists of two components: a coursework component accounting for 60% of the overall grade and a final examination component contributing 40% of the overall grade. GCSE Art assessment is based on four objectives:- Objective 1: Researching artists and different art styles from different cultures and using this to inspire and develop your own ideas. Objective 2: Refine ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources. Experimenting with a wide variety of materials and techniques to improve your skills and help create the best possible outcome for your final piece of work. Objective 3: Record ideas, and observations through observational drawing of actual objects or from your own photographs. Objective 4: Present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating analytical and critical understanding; culminating in a relevant and intentional final piece of work. Teaching in Art in Year 9 will focus on:-         Developing observational drawing skills. Developing creative thinking skills. Becoming self motivated and independent learners. Becoming confident in taking risks and learning from experience and mistakes when exploring and experimenting with ideas, materials, tools and techniques. Developing competence and confidence in refining and developing ideas and proposals, and personal outcomes. Working with a broad range of media, materials and techniques. Developing cultural knowledge, understanding and application of art in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures Looking at and researching the work of other Artists and different styles of Art to inform and inspire personal ideas. Art is not just about painting pictures, there are a wide range of careers for which this qualification is useful:- Any Art and Design related careers such as interior design, fashion design, graphic design, product design etc. It is also a good grounding for any creative careers including floristry, hairdressing, make- up artist, art therapy, architecture, games designer, animator, photography, web design and advertising industry.
