Maths

Head of Department: Miss L Pretty

There are many reasons for studying mathematics as it is a fascinating subject in its own right and it is a necessary support for other subjects such as Science, Design and Technology and Geography. The course aims to be both interesting and useful, with work on number, algebra, shapes (geometry) and statistics.

There are two levels of entry for the exam with the syllabus content and available grades varying with these levels.

Students sit three papers: two are non-calculator papers while the other requires a calculator. Students will therefore need a scientific calculator for this course, ideally a DAL (direct algebraic logic) version as sold from the School Shop.

There is no coursework.

All pupils starting Year 9 & 10 in sets one and two will follow a course aimed at higher level entry (grades 4 to 9 at GCSE). The remaining pupils will follow a similar curriculum, however, it is possible that they will be entered for either the higher or foundation (grades 1 to 5 at GCSE) entry based on their in class performance to date.

Students from all sets are tested regularly during Years 10 and 11 and final decisions over entry level will be made on an individual basis in Year 11.
