VCert Level 2 Health & Fitness

Head of Department: Mr J Kemp

The VCERT offers pupils an excellent opportunity to develop real life skills and understanding

of health, fitness and nutrition.

The course covers two modules:

* Unit 1: An introduction to body systems and principles of training in health and fitness

* Unit 2: Preparing and planning for health and fitness

The course allows pupils to explore and test fitness and health and develops their ability to

evaluate and plan to improve these areas.

Unit 1 will be externally assessed through a 90 minute written exam. The content will be based around the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Basically the effects of exercise on the heart, lungs and body.

Unit 2 will be internally assessed through the completion of an individual portfolio displaying the student’s depth of understanding. This will include the design and completion of a health and fitness plan.

The students will gather Grade Points depending on the level (Pass, Merit, Distinction) which they achieve overall in a unit. These Grade Points combine to produce the final grade.

Anyone who selects this qualification must be committed to producing theoretical and practical coursework by the deadlines which will be set. A strong interest in health and fitness activities is essential. The course will be taught in a practical way using written, video and verbal assessment where possible.

It is not possible to take this course and take GCSE

Physical Education.

The VCERT level 2 certificate in Health and Fitness provides a good foundation for learners in post-16 education, or to entry level job roles within the sector.

Achievement at Level 2 provides a suitable foundation for further study within the sector through progression

onto other vocational qualifications at level 3, such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Sport and Sport and Exercise Sciences. The underpinning knowledge, practical and vocational skills learnt will also enhance and support the progression to a relevant competency based course or a Level 3 NVQ in Sports Development or Leisure Management. Successful learners at level 2 may also consider general qualifications at Level 3 such

as GCE AS or A Levels in Physical Education and Leisure Studies.
