Head of Department: Mr R Beckett

The GCSE Music course is about making and interacting with music. It involves performing, composing and appraising in a wide variety of musical styles. These are broken down into four areas of study: 'Instrumental Music', 'Vocal Music', 'Music For Stage and Screen' and 'Fusions'.

There will be opportunities to use music technology such as sequencing and recording.

The course is suitable for all pupils who enjoy music making activities and wish to develop their musical skills, irrespective of whether they receive specialist instrumental tuition or not. However, some basic skill on an instrument or as a singer is highly recommended.

Performing - 30%

Pupils study an instrument of their choice or they may choose to sing. Most instruments are appropriate including classroom instruments such as keyboards, recorders and percussion, any orchestral or band instrument, guitars, drum kit, keyboard and piano. One solo piece, and one group piece, will be recorded and submitted as coursework.

Composing - 30%

Pupils will compose two pieces, one according to a set brief and one free composition.

Pupils interested in music technology may use computer sequencers, multitrack recorders, digital recording, and sampling in the preparation and presentation of compositions. They may also use technology to record work and to produce printed scores and extract parts.

Pupils are encouraged to become involved in the musical life of the school and participate in concerts and events held at the school and in the local community. The Music Department strongly advises the parents of children interested in GCSE Music to come and see the department at the Parents' Evening.
