frame by frame Beating The Cold With A Hot Look by Jackie Muise Spring has officially arrived here on the east coast and Anne Shears of Oromocto, New Brunswick is determined to celebrate the end of a particularly harsh winter with a day of shopping for the hottest new fashions in eyewear. Anne, an educational support worker, says her next pair of glasses will probably take her to retirement slated for the not too distant future. “My husband has been very impatiently waiting for me to be done working,” chuckles Anne, as she playfully pops on a pair of oversized, pink, square framed Luce Solare sunglasses, with a gold-striped temple, “We’re both looking forward to being able to escape to the sun whenever the whim strikes us.” Hakim Optical in the Capital City, Fredericton, has been Anne’s go to place for eyewear for about 4 years, although the relatively small shop has been operating for more than 17 years, says optician and manager, Ben MacFarlane. Anne likes the atmosphere and the inventory, which ranges from retro ‘60s styles, up to and including a variety of modern brand names in a multitude of shapes and colours. Hakim outlets even sell a range of safety frames and is, in fact, known for being the largest retailer of safety eye-wear in the country. 44 www.spineoptics.com But today Anne is looking for style and perhaps a little adventure. She begins with two pairs of Di Di’s, the first in lime green, shaped in a modified cat-eyed lift at the peak with mottled pearly brown temples. /1 The second are Designer Di Di’s in cherry red, overlaid with diamond coloured studs along the entire narrow rectangle frame and temples both a little too bold for her taste, she decides. Next, the white and blue lattice temples of a pair of Signatures catch her attention, followed by very round and oversized caramel Lidonnas, although the shape isn’t quite right for her face structure. /2 /4 /3 Best to stick with the rectangle, she thinks, and tries a pair of Daisy Fuentes in light brown stripes, but they are too narrow for a progressive lens. In the end, it is a pair of classic black Bruno Alberti’s, in thick and slightly oversized rectangle frames with gold temples that satisfies Anne’s search for that perfect balance of colour, shape and strong fashion statement. 1/Di Di 2/Signature 3/Daisy Fuentes 4/Bruno Alberti
