Vision & Voice “WHY SHOULD ATHLETES WEAR PROTECTIVE OR ASSISTIVE EYEWEAR?” “Today several athletes are wearing glasses and sunglasses for a number of reasons. The obvious one being to protect them- selves against sun, dust, wind or an impact. But athletes have realized that sunglasses can offer more than just protection. Competitive athletes are always looking to better their perfor- mance and to this end sunglasses have come a long way and have many technical lens and frame features that can help athletes gain a competitive edge.” Anthony Joly-Pottuz, product manager, Bollé Sunglasses. “Protective eyewear is a must for athletes of all levels in terms of safety, visual performance and eye health. This is one aspect of vision for which we can do great good by working together with our partners to increase awareness and provide the best- quality eyewear, thus helping Canadians see better.” Jean-François Lacasse, Vice-President of marketing and business development, Essilor Canada. “When playing sports, assistive or corrective eyewear may help to improve or enhance hand-eye co-ordination, binocular space perception and clarity of vision, resulting in improved athletic performance. Additionally, severe eye injuries can occur in non-contact sports and can often be prevented if protective eyewear is worn.” Dr. Ralph Chou, MSc, OD, FAAO Optometrist, Ontario Association of Optometrists member. “For those athletes who have not previously worn eyewear, it is recommended that you try them to protect your eyes from various elements, especially outdoors. Experience visual clarity, UV protection, glare reduction and freedom, simply by choosing the correct eyewear.” Dale Mouscos, sales strategy & marketing supervisor, HOYA Vision Care Canada.
