A N I N T E R V I E W W I T H M I L A KO ST I C You expressed five different series in these twelve miniature art cars. Which one brings you the most joy, since BMW has had a history of expressing joy through its vehicles? I remember how different the way of thinking was to create 3D versions of the 2D paintings, and how unique every single car was and how important it was to match the right BMW car with the art piece. To have artwork that will enhance the feeling and the energy of BMW was the most important part of the project. Each series of my work is a part of my life so every single car that was created is a favourite from the series. I tried to pick ones that meant a great deal to me. What did you find most challenging about working in miniature? Your canvases are normally mid- or largesized. It was extremely difficult to work with small brushes and it limited my thinking process so I could not see the whole composition a lot of times. With 3D elements added, it was like having a lot of obstacles, but that made me challenge my skills and abilities to see it differently and to start creating the miniature cars as canvases. Then it was easier to recreate the original artwork to cover the miniature cars as a blanket. It looked to me like I was holding them and protecting them in a blanket. At the end of the process I was happy with the results. The BMW car models were so exquisite and so detailed that you have the feeling that you’re holding a real car and not a collectable toy car. I would love to actually design one of the “real” full-sized BMW cars and paint it as an art piece. Does your family drive a BMW? If so, what model? I used to have an old BMW many years ago when I was living in Europe. I would love to own a BMW X6. That’s a dream for now!
