94 » OpenRoad Driver FA S T L A N E Victory Lap with Darryl O’Young by Will Fong Darryl O’Young is a man who moves fast. Today the Vancouver-born motorsport champion is based in Hong Kong, known as the top touring car and GT driver in Asia. Having spent 25 years in competitive racing, he has won over forty titles throughout his career. This past summer O’Young once again took a victory lap. He won the Grand Prix de TroisRiviѐres, part of the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin Series. O’Young made history for OpenRoad Racing, pulling off a motorsport hat trick. He became the first driver in over six decades to place first in three races over the single weekend. We caught up recently with O’Young before the start of his 2014 season. » Oh, Canada! What was it like to win for OpenRoad Racing in Trois-Rivières for our country’s GT3 Cup Challenge? You had three wins overall that weekend. I have to thank OpenRoad for giving me such a great opportunity this summer. Trois-Rivières is Canada’s most historic street circuit, so to have the chance to race there was a dream come true. Since becoming a professional race driver, that race was my first time racing back in Canada in over ten years so it was special. The Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières is a fantastic event. There is a real racing culture in that city and it almost brings a festival-like feeling throughout the entire weekend. The fans were energetic and very supportive, so I’m glad OpenRoad Racing put on a great show over there in Québec in our Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. I think we showed them what west coast motorsport is all about since we were the only team and driver from Vancouver over there and we won three races. What made it even more special was the fact that we made some history over there becoming the first driver since the Grand Prix started in 1967 to win three races in a single weekend.
