A bit of History about Port Alberni Port Alberni was actually 2 towns ( Port which is now the older downtown area and Alberni, which is the new more developed side) the line separating them was Roger’s Creek, a very deep ravine and creek that is now a free water park for families and children, it also boosts a covered area for picnic goers and access to a swimming hole and a place you can watch the old Steam Train chug across the ravine and access many trails. It wasn’t until 1967 the 2 towns decided to become 1 community not long after the 1964 Tsunami that devastated most of the businesses and homes along the coastal inlet! It only takes about 10 minutes to get to either side of town so finding Green Space in this small city is pretty easy and quick as we have many parks and walkways within walking distance from downtown and the newer side! My favorite 3 Green Spaces in Port Alberni are #1 “Harbour Quay”, a 2 minute walk from Gaiga Square, a covered shopping area for small business’s and a Farmers Market on the weekend, a playground and walking paths along the water front where you can sit and watch fishing boats and Deep Sea Freighters loading wood from the mill’s and the odd Cruise Ship that sails into harbour! 58
