How To Locate Companies That Are Hiring

On Trend Magazine readers are invited to submit their career related questions to Dr . Ron Shapiro to be addressed in subsequent issues of the magazine . This month we received a question from one of our readers via Twitter : What are the best resources to locate companies that are hiring ?

The single best way to locate companies which are hiring is to be at an event or back at your home or office seated by your telephone or computer and have a company or a professional recruiter representing a company ask you if you would like a position . This is more likely to happen if you :
Are involved in a profession ( for example , outside sales ) rather than in a position with limited visibility .
Attend and network with other professionals business networking events , trade shows , conventions , and conferences .
Are active in community organizations if you are seeking a new position in your current community .
Have a professional profile ( which is visible ) on social networks such as LinkedIn , Google + and FaceBook .
Are an active , productive contributor to professional communities in LinkedIn , Google + and FaceBook .
Let colleagues and friends know that you are looking for a position .
Complete a successful internship or co-op while in college if you are a student about to graduate or a relatively recent graduate .
Your second best way to locate companies that are hiring is to contact professionals who do the type of work you would like to do at the companies and ask them for recommendations on advancing in your career ( but do not ask them for a job !) If they think you will be a good match for their company they will help you find a position with the company or suggest other companies which may be hiring .
You might also think about all of the major companies you would like to work for and check out their web sites . If you need support finding these companies , please check with the reference librarian at your local library . They have access to numerous databases , listing and describing businesses . The companies may post job openings on their own web site . Even if they do not post jobs , to be considered for work at the major corporations at some point you will probably need to fill out an online application accessible from their website .
If you would like a job in your current community , think about places where people who do your kind of work would be visible . Spend time at those places and meet the people who might be potential colleagues .
If you are looking for a position with a small business , contact your local Chamber of Commerce . Chamber leaders are likely to have good ideas for you . If you belong to professional organizations , they may have a job posting website and the leaders of the organization may have ideas if you speak with them .
Finally , there are a plethora of generic job websites out there . There are also frequently job fairs in many communities . The good thing is employers are now cross listing on many sites , but do list yourself on several of them . If you are not already familiar with these sites , speak with your reference librarian and do an online search using terms such as “ best job search websites ” and read some of the articles by credible human resource and recruiting organizations . Please avoid the trap of spending all of your time on these websites . While job searches are never guaranteed , you will most likely be far more successful if you spend your time networking , speaking with and visiting people rather than heads down on websites .
