Sequins Before Sundown Here in New England, January tends to be the gateway to the true winter season. The temps drop and stay dropped. The wind loses any trace of mildness. The days are short and everyone seems to hurry from house to car to work and back again. The Parties have been replaced with endless shoveling. It is unrelenting. Now that I set that depressing stage, let me share with you my little secret weapon for getting through these bleak months. Sequins, sparkle and shine. Not exactly words you associate with the winter months, unless you ski. Skiers appreciate the sparkle of fresh powder as the sun does its thing. I follow nature's lead to find my winter inspiration. The common school of thought that sequins or sparkle are strictly for dressing up for special occasions and usually in the evening, is false. The trick to sporting sparkle before sundown is keep the rest of your outfit grounded with casual pieces in earthy fabrics. Cotton or wool work best and keep the colors to a fairly neutral pallet. A sequin skirt makes a fantastic outfit with a sheer blouse and a strappy heel for any special night out. To brighten up a Tuesday in January, put on that sequin skirt with a chunky sweater, opaque tights and boots or try a chambray shirt and pumps. Layer a sparkly tank (you know the one you only wear on New Year's' Eve?) under your go to suit. A great look for doing a presentation or meeting clients. Feel free to put on those sparkly heels you dance the night away in, with a great pair of trouser jeans and a blouse to give your casual Friday a little oomph. Don't own any sparkle? January is a great time to find a piece on sale. You get more bang for your buck. When you grab your "special occasion" clothes on sale and put them into the regular every day outfit rotation. The holidays may be over but that doesn't mean your wardrobe has to go into mourning. By Gaelen Abt Style Sherpa stylesherpa.com
