Blow drying , curling , straightening , these are things that many of us do on a daily basis that we know can damage our hair . However , there are five other things in your hair routine that can cause just as much , or more damage .
# 1 : Brushing while wet . This is a hairdresser ' s pet peeve . When your hair is wet , it ' s best to use a wide tooth comb or pick to comb it out . Using a brush can actually rip through your hair , damaging the hair shaft and ends as you go .
# 2 : Elastics and rubber bands . We are all guilty of throwing our hair up in a pony tail or messy bun to get it out of our face . Rubber bands should never be an option for this . Hair is easily caught in the bands , ripping strands and causing severe breakage . Hair elastics are a better option , but should still be used with caution for the same reason as rubber bands . Using a claw clip or a soft hair tie are you best options .
# 3 : Styling while wet .
Never do this . Yes , there are wet to dry straighteners on the market , but that doesn ' t mean they ' re safe . When you apply a high heat source to wet hair you are in a sense , frying it . Always make sure that your hair is 100 % dry before using any hot tool on it .
# 4 : Not using product . Mousse , gel , serums , creams and more are not just something that your stylist is trying to upsell you to make more money . They are essential for healthy hair . If you use any type of heat source , these products not only help style , but they also add a protective coating that lessens the heat damage to your hair .
# 5 : Not using conditioner . I hear it all the time . " Conditioner weighs my hair down ." Truth is , it probably doesn ' t . Most often if you feel that conditioner is weighing your hair down , you are using one that is too heavy for your hair , using too much , or not rinsing it all out . Conditioner helps to close and protect your hair cuticle , therefore lessening the chance for split ends .
