On The Pegs PAT SMAGE Pat Smage turned in the performance of a lifetime on Saturday when he beat Marc Freixa in the toughest event of the year. Here’s what Pat had to say about the event: “When it’s easy it’s definitely a little bit more about consistency and you’ve got to be somewhat lucky too to string together a good day, but when it’s hard like this it separates everybody a little bit more. Last year when it was like this (in Oregon) he pulled away quite a bit, so it was really good for me to be able to be right there with him and actually get a win in these conditions. Not only was it hard, but it was also very muddy. I’ve always worked on it a lot, but I put a little extra emphasis on that over the winter. Definitely good to see it paying off. It’s a lot of work to try to learn how to ride that stuff better. Really happy I was able to do that. “Saturday morning Ryan says, “Well, we know what not to do.” He was talk- ing about Oregon last year. I wasn’t going to let that happen again. Just gave it my best every section and never gave up. Just had a little bit more confi- dence going in and kept that throughout the day. Now I have that built for those conditions in the future. “Coming into Saturday’s trial I knew where I stood and what I needed to do, but you still got to go do it. It’s just been a really tight year going back and forth and so many close events that it just makes it hard to sleep at night until it’s over. I’m definitely happy with it so far and hopefully one more good day Sunday. “Section three on the first loop was big for me, to get a one there. Definitely just watchi
