The Solution: Weight Loss Exercise Exercise has proven benefits in the prevention and treatment of cancer, independent of body weight. It has been linked to a decreased risk of 12 cancers: breast, oesophageal, stomach, bowel, liver, gallbladder, kidney, endometrial, blood (myeloid leukaemia, multiple myeloma), head and neck, bladder and lung. Recently, the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia released a position statement recommending exercise to be prescribed as an essential component of cancer treatment. “Based on what the science tells us, exercise is the best medicine people with cancer can take, in addition to their cancer treatments, to reverse treatment related side-effects, slow the progression of their cancer, increase quality of life and improve the chances of survival. If we could turn the benefits of exercise into a pill it would be demanded by patients, prescribed by every cancer specialist and subsidised by government – it would be seen as a major breakthrough in cancer treatment,” said Associate Professor Prue Cormie, lead author of the position statement. Exercise is arguably the single healthiest modifiable activity anyone can undertake, regardless of whether or not weight is lost in the process. Cancer Council Australia recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate activity (e.g. brisk walking) or 30 minutes of vigorous activity (e.g. jogging, cycling) every day. Just remember any activity is better than none – so find what you love to do and get active!
