from the vicar . . . October sees Arlesey’s first Music and Arts Festival, with 16 events and 8 or more exhibits. (Please see separate article for details.) This promises to be a great event with varied contributions – music (from classical to folk), art, drama, dance, poetry, film and photography from all sectors of our community – young people, adults, amateur, professional – and some visiting musicians from Nottinghamshire and Dorset. The Arts (which includes all those forms above and many more) demonstrate so vividly how creative human beings are. We literally create new things out of nothing, when we compose, write or perform. And creativity is the prime quality with think of when we reflect on the nature of God – the creator of everything that is. It is something to wonder at that he also creates beings that can themselves create new things. But the Arts also reflect another feature of God’s nature – his desire that we should be reconciled to one another. The Arts form a body of activity that crosses international and cultural boundaries, encouraging people to work together, finding in each other complimentary talents and abilities. And in music, for example, there is a universal form of notation in which nearly all musical works are written. I would like us to reflect on the idea that whenever we make music (including singing in the shower or our car!) or engage in any kind of art form, we are bringing to the surface the universal song of God.
