from the Street Watch vicar . . . We live in very unpredictable times – the EU Referendum most surprisingly left us as a nation without any effective government or leadership for nearly three weeks. Families, friends and neighbours found themselves on alternate sides of a political divide that caused a level of pain and distress to which we are quite unaccustomed. The horrors of terrorist violence once again made themselves felt on French soil in Nice in a way that beggars any understanding. So many things that we take for granted seem to be under question at the moment, and the future seems increasingly less predictable. Increasingly I find comfort in being in the Church where I find the atmosphere so peaceful. One can feel the effect of generations of people offering their prayers there over the past eight or nine hundred years – just imagine what wars, plagues and other calamities they experienced; and the presence of the sacrament reminds me of the presence of God in Christ in every moment of our lives. If you find yourself distressed by world or local events do please take advantage of the Church building; or if you want to talk things through I am always available as a confidential ear. As far as our own nation is concerned, we have a history of being resilient and adaptive and I am sure that we will rise creatively and collaboratively to the challenges that present themselves. Street Watch is about good citizenship and supporting a better neighbourhood by patrolling your own streets. It provides visible reassurance and appropriately engages in local issues that matter most to our local community. The presence and activities of Street Watch members will have a significant and positive impact on quality of life issues within the community. Street Watch members also liaise with local police to encourage positive information sharing and liaison. Street Watch is a way of reclaiming back our streets and open spaces from those who may wish to engage in activities that undermine our community. Arlesey Scheme details: • Will cover the whole village • Needs a maximum of 15 members. • Patrols are always in pairs, wearing hi-vis jackets labelled Bedfordshire Police and StreetWatch along with other equipment. • Members commit to only 2 hours a month, hopefully more • Patrol any time of day or night. Look, listen and report only. For more information, please leave your name below or message me. In the light of recent incidents in the village, we can surely get 15 volunteers out of 5000 residents to take part in this scheme.
