Fairfield Players “You just never know” Free garden rescue service unveiled for all of Bedfordshire On Friday 17th and Saturday 18th June, Fairfield Players will be performing a play entitled “You just never know”, by Liz Dobson. When Mo decides to surprise her husband with an anniversary party, little does she know that she will be the one left speechless and horrified. But the story doesn’t end there, because no-one could have predicted what happened next... During the interval, a fish and chip supper will be served. The performance will take place at the Memorial Hall, Hallworth Drive, Stotfold, SG5 4HR and starts at 7.45pm. Bring your own alcohol. Entry is by ticket only. Green Aiders, run by community charity Groundwork Luton & Bedfordshire, is a free one-off gardening service for older (65 years plus) and disabled people who aren’t able to tackle the work themselves. From May 2016, the Green Aiders will tame 155 gardens across the whole of Bedfordshire. The work will be carried out by Groundwork staff and a team of local volunteers. Most of these volunteers are public-spirited adults with learning disabilities. Green Aiders improves the gardening skills, physical health and mental wellbeing of the volunteers by getting them out and working as a team. At the same time it makes residents safer in their homes by reducing their risk of slips, trips and falls, and preventing them being targeted by doorstop criminals and rogue traders – both consequences of overgrown gardens. For this reason, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire has awarded funding to the project. Green Aiders is also funded by Luton Borough Council Public Health. One happy resident said: “The visit couldn’t have been better – you’ve done everything I wanted and the volunteers love it. I was watching them and they’d got everything sorted: one was doing the grass, another was pruning, another was weeding. I thought, ‘Okay, these guys have got a proper system. They know what they’re doing.’” Over the past year, the Green Aiders have tackled over 80 gardens across Luton and Central Bedfordshire, but have received many more than this number in requests. This year’s expansion of the project, made possible by the funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire and Luton Borough Council Public Health, will allow the Green Aiders to help even more people in a larger geographic area. Residents can be council, housing association, or private rental tenants, or owner-occupiers. If you or someone you know needs a Green Aiders visit, call Christian on 01582 720 147 or email christian.iszchak@groundwork.org.uk.
