Otherwise I go to the theatre, the opera, out for dinner. And I’ve got a large CD collection that I’ve been collecting for years. Lots of different works. I’m collecting all the operas on CD that I liked as a teenager but I couldn’t afford before. Now they are all selling for £1 on Amazon’s new and used section, so I’m rapidly buying CDs and currently double stacking them! Currently there is a great positive focus on rigour and education but I do worry sometimes that that is at the risk of music and arts. It’s great when parents can support their children outside of school with other activities but not everyone can, so the pressure in school comes from time – we have such a short time. What is the future for the school? What I’m trying to do for the children is provide the idea that they can do anything. Not in a silly “just wish it and happens”, I don’t mean that, I mean if you work hard apply yourself you can be anything that you want to be. My hometown is a little mining village in the midlands. My journey to being a head teacher began with a teacher seeing something in me and saying “actually I think he should learn a musical instrument” and she suggested a piano. My parents managed to help me with that, and what I want the children of Arlesey to think, is they can be proud of Arlesey but that they can do other things as well and go to places if they really want to. You will inevitably shape and influence the children of Arlesey, some more than others but how do yo
