the brick works
In the early twentieth century brickmaking slowed down and some brick works closed but
around these firms communities grew and so did the effects on these communities.
Here is Part 4 of our feature on the brickworks– Stories from the Brickworks
The stories on the next four pages are mainly from London Brick Company’s
own newsletters
Andrew Mortlock has collected a vast archive from these newsletters in
conjunction with Hanson Brick Company and has kindly given us access
with details and stories from the days when the kilns were alive. We have
put together a montage of some stories and tried to show some of the
people working in and around the brickworks through its long association
with Arlesey.

an article about local workers at the works who joined the local company of the Home Guard.

Bowlers Meet at Dinner
Arlesey Bowls Club held a dinner with guests from
Langford, St. Ippolyts, Norton, Stotfold and Henlow.
Prizes were presented and after an excellent meal
had been ‘disposed of’ and the Loyal Toast had been
drunk, Mr A. Reed of Norton proposed a toast of
“The Club”.
