from the
Vicar . . .
My picture this month is of the flower display in front of the Font for Harvest.
It’s a season when we remember to give thanks to God for his goodness to
us in creation. Much of our worship is in the form of ‘remembrance’ of one
form or another.
To ‘remember’ literally means to put back together again (re-member, as
opposed to dis-member!) Of course, we normally use the word in a rather
weaker sense of ‘calling to mind’.
But November is a month when we remember the lives of those who died
serving their country, especially in the two great wars, but at other times too.
We make much more of it than merely ‘calling to mind’ – this year our
procession will start in St Peter’s Avenue, after our morning service, and
make its way down to the memorial; there we hear the names of the fallen
read out and keep a respectful two minutes silence. All over the country, and
in many parts of the world, we will be joined by thousands if not millions of
other people standing still for the two minutes’ silence.
The other great remembrance that we rehearse in our churches, is
the weekly ritual of the Communion Service, also called the Eucharist,
Last Supper or Mass. In this we recall the sacrifice of Jesus made on the
Cross, and the last fellowship meal that he shared with his disciples. In
this remembrance we also believe that the body and blood of Christ, in the
sacrament, represents his presence with us. In the service we say ‘The Lord
is here! His spirit is with us.’
If you go into St Peter’s Church you will see a red lamp burning constantly
near the altar. This reminds us that the bread and wine of the sacrament
is kept in the Church, in a
small cupboard called the
Aumbry. For many people
this is a very real way of
feeling Christ’s presence
with us, here and now.
With all best wishes
