taking to the air
Some people say that you should try things you have never tried before. So recently I did two
things at the same time that I have never done. Firstly I went flying in a two-seater light aircraft,
but at the same time I took some aerial photographs of the local area.
I had contacted Henlow Flying Club to see if it was possible and Helen in
the office replied soon after that yes I could. Previous to this I had flown
in a Glider, a Microlight and quite a few passenger aircraft either end of a
holiday, so I was prepared for the experience . . . to a certain extent.
I booked a tentative day and time as I had explained that I really wanted
some ‘good weather’. I had arranged a late afternoon slot on Saturday 23rd
May but constantly looking skywards during the day I felt the weather wasn’t
on my side – it was grey and overcast. I contacted the office at Henlow and I
spoke to Andy who was to be my Pilot for the flight. He said ‘The weather is
set to change later so why not come over and wait here to see if it does”:. So

I jumped in the car and got to RAF Henlow, parked in the car park and went
to the Guard Room to get a pass onto the base.
I had been booked in and was on the list so I showed my passport to the
officer on reception, had my photo taken and went back to the car. Driving
through the security gates I looked again at the sky – it was still grey.
I parked in the small car park by the flying club and walked into the
reception past a couple of chairs and a coffee table. I was a bit early but
introduced myself and signed in. Andy tried to assure me the weather was
going to brighten up, and said maybe I’d like to wait in the waiting room for a
while. I did this but was not convinced. After about fifteen minutes Andy came
