or burning away of the frontal lobes of the brain. In the early days of this operation no one knew exactly what they were doing and many tragic mistakes were made. This procedure was used on patients with a ‘disruptive violent nature’ – those who were deemed difficult or dangerous to others and themselves. This was basically a hit and miss affair with no real knowledge of how the patient would react afterwards. Almost certainly the patient would have an irreparable change to their personality, moods, thoughts and behaviour. TCH introduced this operation in 1943 but because of the high moral cost of such an unethical and intrusive procedure it was quietly abandoned in the early 1950s. By the late 1930s Three Counties Hospital was settling down and actively striving for better working conditions for its staff and better treatments for its patients, but a dark cloud was looming over Europe and it would not be long before TCH would be thrown into turmoil once more.
