One of the stunning pieces in St Peter’s church is the 14th century Font.
Being made of the local and very soft stone, it has deteriorated over the
years, to the point where the exquisite carvings on the eight panels are
barely recognisable. Some were never completed in the first place!
We are delighted that the art department of Etonbury Academy has
agreed to produce eight paintings that will re-create these panels in their
original splendour, and help visitors to see what the font may have looked
like originally. We hope this project will be completed by Easter 2015.
The Rev G James Mayhew, vicar of the parish at the beginning of the
20th century, reported that in the first 10 years of the 1900s there were
1,193 baptisms here! This font has been in continuous use for around 700
years.
Baptism (or Christening) is of course a symbol of entering a new life,
becoming part of the Christian faith. I am always very happy to discuss
baptism whether for infants or grown-ups! Please contact me if you would
