s we get towards the end of the year I look back and think to myself
what an eventful year! Issue 28 is now out and I’m am proud of how
it looks and feels. I do realise though you may not know what goes on
behind the magazine, so I thought I would give you some information
around it.
In 2011 I was very aware there was a need to put information in front
of people as the Parish magazine was no longer being produced
I set out in June 2011 to develop a website to try and inform people
of as much information as possible, and run it as a non-profit enterprise.
I also felt that I wanted to create somewhere people could go to add or
contribute to what I was doing. It worked and the feedback I received
was very positive. However it didn’t reach everybody – there were still
lots with no internet access. So I was persuaded to put together a ‘paper’
version, and in September the same year Issue 1 was printed and
distributed with some local businesses supporting from the beginning.
There was instant feedback plus support from local business in the
form of advertising. As I work full-time – the editorial, design, printing
and distribution is all done in my spare time with the help of a team of
volunteers delivering for me. The magazine has grown steadily, over
the last two and a bit years, from an 8-page black and white to a 16page full-colour magazine. All this has been done by just covering the
printing costs with that advertising. I still have the website with photos
and features plus information and a local business directory which is
constantly busy.
Going forward, I am looking into the new year with an offer on
advertising (7 months for the price of 6 – see page 12) where I hope
more local business will support this as a community resource that
is used by groups and individuals to promote their events, clubs and
anything else that’s going on.
