One Million Candles To Remember
Royal British Legion 1914 WW1 Centenary 1918
Arlesey War Memorial, Monday 4th August 2014 at 10.00pm
The local Branch invited he communities of both Arlesey and Stotfold to join
in a National moment of pause, reflection and to pay tribute to those who
lost their lives in World War One.
The service took place simultaneously at both Arlesey and Stotfold War
Memorials on the day and time that Britain officially entered the war exactly 100
years to the day.
Around two hundred Arlesey residents joined the Arlesey branch at the Arlesey
War Memorial for a short moving service of commemoration. A brief welcome
address was given by the Branch Vice Chairman Hugh Harper after which
candles were lit by those present.
On behalf of the Methodist Church Doreen Archer read the poem In Flanders
Fields by John McCreae (May 1915)
On behalf of St Peters Church Helen Frost read the Prayer.
The WW1 roll of honour for the Arlesey men who had lost their lives followed
by the Legion Exortation was read by Hugh Harper.
The “Last Post” was played by Ian Muncey and the Legion Arlesey Standard
carried by Peter Rogers was dipped in an Act of Homage followed by two minutes
silence “Reveille” was played and the Standard raised.
The service concluded with the extinguishing of the candles
