Emma Porter – Photgrapher
On the cover of the July issue of on the button was an image of a swan.
The image was sent to me by a local young lady by the name of Emma
Porter who contacted me to see if wanted to use some of her images.
I said yes, and used her image for the cover. I have recently been in
contact with Emma again and looked at some images on her
Flikr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/emmaporter83/
I must say I am not a professional photographer, but use
images all the time professionally, and Emma does take
some lovely images.
Emma says “from the age of 5, I have loved taking
photographs. Freezing and capturing moments in time.
Taking pictures of wildlife and nature at its best is
a passion of mine.”
Emma has also developed a website which showcases
her images and you can visit her new site at:

Etonbury News
Some sad goodbyes . . .
“THEY ARE AMAZING!!! That was my first impression of the children
here and I’ve found over the last four years that I was wrong—THEY’RE
EVEN BETTER THAN THAT!” After four years I leave Etonbury with great
fondness and pride over the achievements of the children and staff. Thank
you all for your generosity of spirit over the years. I wish you all the very best
for the future. Dr A Mistrano
Mrs Clark has been at Etonbury for 11 years, leading the English
Department and been a tutor in both KS2 and KS3. We would like to wish
her every success in her retirement in Warwick.
Mr Appadoo has led the PE at Etonbury to great heights, making this its
best year yet. Etonbury will truly miss Mr Appadoo and we wish him every
success in his future endeavours.
Mr Larke is sadly leaving us after many, many years. Mr Larke has been
a full member of the school community both in and out of the classroom and
he will be greatly missed. We wish him well in his retirement.
Mr Purdie, although only having been with us for a year, has fully
immersed himself in the Etonbury ethos. We would like to take this
opportunity to thank him for all his hard work this year and wish him every
success in his teacher training.

The image of the swan on the July
cover was taken by Emma at the
River Hiz to the west of the village.
Not steamed up!
It was advertised with the promise of people being able to board the first
steam train to stop at Arlesey Railway station in 70 years. Enthusiasts were
told the day before that the locomotive will be replaced with a diesel engine
due to the risk of fire, enhanced by the hot and dry conditions leading up to
the day.
Among the fare-paying passengers were quite a few who were angry that
the locomotive had been swapped, who complained to staff on the train.
Steam engines expel hot ashes especially when stationery, and these
can set fire to fields and hedge rows alongside tracks. When steam engines
were the only source of hauling goods and passengers staff were carried
as ‘beaters’ to extinguish fires close to tracks caused by the engines. Today
beaters are no longer used, and water is no longer kept on board to help put
out trackside fires.
