I recently met Claire. She has had type 1 Diabetes since the age of 13. Type 1 Diabetes develops when the body is unable to produce the hormone insulin due to the insulin-producing cells being destroyed. Insulin works as a chemical messenger that helps your body use the glucose in your blood to give you energy. Claire got involved with the charity ‘Medical Detection Dogs’ and had been working with them for two years when she applied for a dog. Magic has been with Claire for less than six months now, but already she says “I couldn’t imagine my life without him”. Magic has been trained, by an instructor, to react to a particular smell given off when Claire’s insulin levels have fallen. This training was done prior to Claire taking Magic in, and took six weeks before he was ready. To do this Claire had to take a mouth swab, freeze it and then get this to the charity so it could be used in the training. It only took Magic half an hour to react to the swab. Claire and Magic walk once or twice a day and when he is out with her he wears a red jacket with the charity name on, and a sign on his lead saying he is an ‘Assistance Dog’. Claire says “Some people come straight up to us and make a fuss of Magic but he is ‘working’ so never stops really checking if I am OK, so please remember to ask before stroking him, if you see us out walking”.
