This part of the day brings out the side in me that likes to explore and tinker , allowing me to fully understand and manipulate each product ’ s features so I can design the best solution for a client .
Q : Many IT leaders admit that security challenges keep them up at night ; we like to say they get us up in the morning . What is one of the biggest challenges ahead for 2017 ?
A : All IT leaders are challenged to be proactive , but sometimes they can ’ t be because they don ’ t have the time , budget or resources . Adopting a proactive mindset , however , can help bake security in at every level , throughout every function and department , ultimately leading to a strong company security posture .
Q : What is one thing companies should be doing today ?
A : One of the biggest opportunities today is the ability to collect and parse through data for threat predictions . We can collect information from each device and find data trends to predict a future threat from a user , application , machine or service . Using a combination of big data and managed services , all of our clients can become proactive to enjoy a higher level of security and respond to any security challenge they encounter .
Q : Your past life was spent in engineering and you have a decade of security experience . Why the switch ?
A : Starting in the technology field when I was younger , I learned a lot through hands-on experience . As I moved around in my career , I became more involved in implementing security throughout different technologies ; it ’ s a backbone to so many solutions . Over time I became more involved in providing or reviewing security around a client ’ s network , software , data , or users ; the excitement and challenge of learning a customer ’ s needs and in turn architecting a solution thrilled me .
The largest challenge any security professional has is that things are constantly changing — the threat landscape , client needs and solutions . Researching , learning and sharing information with our peers and customers keep the job both exciting and challenging .
Q : What ’ s something people at work may not know about you ?
A : My wife and I have the privilege of raising nine children , which has given me the chance to explore a number of new experiences in my life — from being a coach for basketball , volleyball and softball to working with young athletes to assist them with gaining knowledge to help them personally and athletically .
